AFTER HER BATH, WRAPPED in the enormous square of white that was the dwarf’s nightgown, Ella went back into Finn’s room. He gave her a quick kiss, leaving her breathless as he headed to bathe. She closed the door after him and hugged herself, trying to calm the nerves butterflying in her stomach.

Finn might not think his room over the pub was much, but Ella was thrilled. There had been running water in the bathroom, both cold and hot. She’d never had that in the tower. And in here, the fire had warmed the chill out of the air. She sat in the chair in front of the flames and picked out her curls as the heat dried her hair.

She was out of the castle. She’d taken the first steps to claim her life, whatever that was going to be. She didn’t know how, but she was going to change the world. And Finn would be right beside her, at least she thought so.

Her hair was merely damp ringlets, when he came back. Her heart did a little flip.

Gone was the torn and bloodied tuxedo and in its place were breeches and a loose shirt, with open laces at the front and a deep vee revealing his chest. Suddenly, she was shy. Her experiences with men were quick gropes out from under her stepmother’s radar. She’d even gone further than that with one page—a week long affair in which they’d fumblingly lost their virginities amidst much giggling. She’d thought she’d been in love, but Mrs. Tibson had ferreted the information out and the boy had been sacked. All the other maids could flirt and conduct clandestine affairs, but not her. Ronatta made sure she hadn’t even had that in her life. It hadn’t mattered much. The boy had left, she’d moped for a while and gotten over it. But now, she had so much more than that. She had this immense burgeoning heat in her chest, one that was so much more than that momentary lust.

She watched Finn from under her eyelashes, as he moved around the room putting things away. Was this tightness in her chest love? Could this really be her life now— living with an amazing man, the entire world at her fingertips?

“What are you thinking?” He smiled at her.

She smiled back, the rising happiness making her feel as light as the sparks crackling from the flames. “I can’t believe we did it.”

“You did it.” Finn’s smile stretched into a grin. “Without that pumpkin, we wouldn’t have gotten out right under the Royal Guard’s nose.” He pulled a bottle and two glasses out of a narrow cupboard. “And I think that means we should celebrate!” He poured a small amount into each glass and handed her one. “To Ella, the most inventive girl in the entire Crimson Court.”

They clanked glasses and she took a sip, the golden-brown liquid searing a path down her throat. “Whoa.” She coughed and wiped tears from her eyes as he grinned at her.
